Data Mover — VMware exit, planned by AI

Leave VMware.
Know every link first.

Data Mover maps how your applications connect, plans the move in waves, and migrates your VMs to HPE VME, Red Hat OpenShift or AWS with near-zero downtime. It runs inside your own environment.

Agentless · VDDK or non-VDDK · No SaaS — your data stays in your network
The problem

Most migrations go wrong in the planning, not the copy.

Copying a VM is the easy part. The risk is in what nobody wrote down.

Hidden links break apps

One missed connection between an app server and its database can take a business system down on cutover night.

Plans live in spreadsheets

Move groups get built by hand in long workshops, and they go out of date as soon as the estate changes.

Costs creep by the hour

Hourly services and separate discovery tools make the final bill hard to predict.

The AI assessment

See the dependencies before anything moves.

Included with every license. The assessment finds which VMs talk to each other and groups them into the same wave, so no application gets split across two platforms. Your team reviews, changes and approves the plan before anything moves.

WAVE 1WAVE 2WAVE 3
Scattered VMs, grouped into waves by what they depend on. Orange nodes are the anchor tier of each application.
01

Application dependencies

Which VMs talk to each other, over which connections. Every application stack shows as one group, not a list of servers.

02

Readiness and risk

Every VM is scored for migration readiness and risk, so problem workloads show up early instead of on cutover night.

03

Best-fit migration method

Each stack gets a recommended way to move: live move with incremental sync, planned offline move, or rebuild on the new platform.

04

Move waves

Dependent VMs land in the same wave, and waves are ordered sensibly, so applications are never split across two platforms.

05

Target platform fit

Workloads are scored against HPE VME, Red Hat OpenShift and AWS, so each application lands where the facts say it should.

06

Compliance checks

Built-in ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS checks flag gaps before you move, not after an audit.

Your team stays in charge

The AI does the heavy lifting. People make the calls.

  • Review the dependency map and correct anything the AI missed
  • Move applications between waves, or hold them back
  • Accept or change the recommended method and target for each stack
  • Sign off the plan before a single VM moves
How a Data Mover project runs

Five phases. Each one ends with something you can sign off.

01

Assess

AI maps dependencies, scores every VM and suggests the best migration method for each app stack.

02

Plan

Review the suggested waves, then agree on move order and maintenance windows.

03

Sync

Data copies while VMs keep running. Only changed data is sent after the first copy.

04

Cut over

Validate

Platforms

From VMware to where you want to run next.

Data Mover connects to vCenter and reads VMs from ESXi without agents, then moves them to the target your assessment points to.

Target

HPE VME

For teams moving to a KVM-based private cloud on HPE infrastructure.

Target

Red Hat OpenShift

For teams that want to run VMs and containers on one platform.

Target

AWS

For workloads headed to public cloud, into your own AWS account.

VDDK mode

Uses VMware's Virtual Disk Development Kit to read VM disks and track changed blocks. A good fit where VDDK is already approved.

Non-VDDK mode

For environments where VDDK is restricted or not approved. The migration still goes ahead, without extra VMware components.

Near-zero downtime, in plain terms

Your VMs keep running while Data Mover copies them.

  1. 01The first full copy runs in the background while applications stay online
  2. 02After that, only changed data is sent, again and again, keeping the target up to date
  3. 03At cutover, a short final sync catches the last changes
  4. 04The VM starts on the target, and your team checks the application

Security and deployment

Your data stays in your network.

Data Mover is not a SaaS service. It runs inside your environment, so VM data moves from source to target without passing through a vendor cloud. Bring your security team to the proof of value — they can review the deployment, access and data path themselves.

No SaaS, no vendor cloud

Nothing is uploaded to SAN Data Systems. The tool and your data stay on your side, moving from source to target inside your network.

Nothing installed on VMs

Data Mover is agentless. Your VMs are not touched until the agreed cutover.

Controlled access

When our engineers help, they connect only through your VPN or jump host, using accounts you control. Staff are background-checked and covered by NDA.

Questions security teams ask

Straight answers before your review.

Does any of our VM data pass through SAN Data Systems' cloud?

No. Data Mover runs in your environment and copies data directly from your VMware estate to your target platform. There is no SaaS portal and no vendor cloud in the data path.

Do we have to install anything on our VMs?

No. Data Mover is agentless. It reads VMs through vCenter and ESXi, and your VMs are not touched until the agreed cutover.

What access does Data Mover need?

Access to vCenter and a network path to the target platform. The exact accounts and permissions are agreed with your team at kickoff.

Can we use it if VMware VDDK is not approved in our environment?

Yes. Non-VDDK mode is available for environments where VDDK is restricted or not approved, and the migration proceeds without extra VMware components.

How do SDS engineers connect when they help us?

Only through your VPN or jump host, using accounts you control. You can remove access at any time.

Partners

Sell it, deliver it, or both.

Systems integrators and managed service providers can offer Data Mover under clear terms, with SAN Data Systems engineers behind them. Roles are agreed up front, so nobody is guessing on cutover night.

Resell

You sell Data Mover licenses and your team runs the migrations, with partner pricing, deal registration and SDS product support behind you.

Deliver together

You own the customer. SDS engineers add capacity for assessment, planning or cutovers at partner rates, with roles agreed per project.

Unlimited license

For high-volume partners and MSPs: 12- or 18-month terms, unlimited migrations within fair use, and a quarterly payment option.
